Our Year 10 students have just returned from an incredible Bronze Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) practice expedition in the stunning surroundings of Swaledale near Reeth—and what an experience it has been!
Thirty students took on the challenge with fantastic determination, resilience and teamwork, navigating their way through the beautiful Yorkshire countryside. Throughout the expedition, they supported one another every step of the journey, demonstrating the positive attitude and strong team spirit that defines the Carmel College community.
The weather certainly added an extra layer of challenge. While conditions remained dry for most of the first day, rain arrived overnight and continued into the following morning. Despite the wet and muddy conditions, spirits remained high, with students showing excellent perseverance and commitment right through to the finish.
After a long day of walking through the beautiful landscapes of Swaledale, our Year 10 students showed fantastic teamwork as they worked together to pitch tents, organise camp and settle in for the evening.
Overnight, the weather took a turn, and students woke up to wet and muddy conditions. However, this didn’t dampen their spirits! Throughout the expedition, they demonstrated incredible resilience, determination and support for one another, embracing the challenges and continuing with positive attitudes.
One of the highlights of the evening was gathering together to cook hot dogs and enjoy a well-earned meal after a demanding day on the hills—a perfect way to relax, reflect and build lasting memories.
Experiences like this are at the heart of the DofE programme, encouraging students to step outside their comfort zones, develop independence and grow in confidence while working as a team.
A huge well done to all 30 students who took part in the expedition—you should be extremely proud of your efforts.
We would also like to extend our thanks to the staff who supported the expedition, ensuring a safe, rewarding and memorable experience for everyone involved.
