Everyone at Carmel College is celebrating the fantastic news that former student George Mair has signed his first professional contract with Newcastle United, marking a major milestone in his football journey.
George, who left Carmel this summer, achieved the incredible feat of signing professionally on his 17th birthday. The Darlington-born goalkeeper has been part of the Newcastle United Academy since Under-8 level and has worked tirelessly through the age groups, demonstrating exceptional commitment, resilience and talent along the way.
His progress has been impressive throughout his young career. This season, George made his Under-21 debut for the Magpies, having already represented the club in the UEFA Youth League at just 15 years old. His performances have also earned him recognition on the international stage, representing England at Under-17 level.
Speaking after signing his contract, George said:
"I was over the moon. It means a lot. I'm really grateful for the opportunity I've been given."
During his time at Carmel, George embodied the dedication and determination needed to succeed at the highest level. We were proud to support him throughout his journey and are delighted to see his hard work being rewarded with this exciting opportunity.
From the classrooms of Carmel College to signing a professional contract with Newcastle United, George's story is a wonderful example of what can be achieved through perseverance, ambition and belief.
Congratulations, George. The entire Carmel community is incredibly proud of you, and we look forward to following your career in the years ahead.
