Carmel College Sports Presentation Evening 2018
Despite a recent operation on his Achilles tendon, World Champion 60m sprinter, Richard Kilty presented the awards at the 18th Carmel College Sports Presentation Evening. Carmel College Sports Day
Two new school records were broken in this year’s sports day, Year 7 Benedict Davies cleared 1.51cm in the high jump to beat former English Schools’ Champion Phillip Collins record by 1cm. Olivia Bell beat the Year 7 Long Jump record with a distance of 4.31m. St Aidans were the overall winners.

Carmel won both the boys and girls overall trophies in the North East Catholic Schools Track and Field Championships, held at Middlesbrough Sports Village.

James Wilcock Champion of Britain
James Wilcock (7C) travelled to Bath last weekend to compete in the British Modern Pentathlon Championship, he came home as the 2018 Under 13 boys’ champion. The modern pentathlon consists of swimming, fencing, showjumping on an unknown horse, running and laser pistol shooting. He has also qualified in laser run as a team member of the North of England (Year 7 & 8 ) squad, travelling to the National School games being held at Loughborough University in August. Also qualified is Dan Boyer in the Year 9 & 10 squad.
Carmel Record Breakers Win Town Sports
Carmel’s athletes set 10 new town records at the Darlington Town Sports, at Eastbourne Sports Complex. They won the girls’ championship by 77 points, but the boys lost by just 2 points and were crowned overall champions for the 30th consecutive year.

Year 9 Sports Leaders Team Run County Cricket Tournament
15 Year 9 Sports Leaders ran the County Durham Primary Schools’ Cricket Tournament. They umpired and scored all of the matches that were played at Darlington Cricket Club, at Feethams. They were all a real credit to the college!
Great Start to Season for Harry
After being selected to represent Durham County Cricket earlier in the year, Harry Crawshaw has made an impressive start to the season. Opening the batting for Durham County he has had some promising innings, with scores of 30 and 45 vs Leicestershire and 34 vs Yorkshire. His top score to date came against Cumbria, where he scored 99, falling just 1 run short of a century. Please click here for the scorecard.
Darlington U13 Cricket Tournament
In the Darlington Schools’ Chance to Compete Cricket tournament, Carmel U13 boys cricket team finished 3rd overall, narrowly missing out on qualification for the Durham County Finals.
Carmel Athletes Perform Well At Regional Finals
In the English Schools’ Cup Regional A Final at Middlesbrough Sports Village, athletes from Carmel produced some excellent performances on both track and field. Niamh qualifies for English National Swimming Championships
Niamh Sweeney (10R) is one of just two swimmers who have qualified from Darlington Swimming Club for the English National Swimming Championships, which takes place at Ponds Forge, Sheffield from 31 July – 4 August. It is Swim England’s biggest domestic swimming event of the year. She will compete in the Ladies 16 years 200m Butterfly Event. Her entry time is 2.30.0 which currently places her 16th in England. Many congratulations Niamh!
James Crowned Minimus Regional Tetrathlon Champion
James Wilcock represented Northern England in the Minimus Regional Tetrathlon Championships which took place in Scotland at the weekend. English, Scottish and Irish teams battled it out with a very strong Irish squad dominating the team competition. However James put in a solid performance in each of the 4 disciplines of running, shooting, swimming and cross country riding to win overall as an individual. James also joined his sister Sarah and Eleanor Clulow in representing the North at the Junior Regional Championships in Warwickshire over the previous weekend. All performed well coping with a very technical cross country riding course.
Athletic Success at the County Championships
After a very successful day at the Durham County Schools’ Athletics Championships, at Monkton Stadium on Saturday 9 June, seven athletes from Carmel were selected for the Durham team for the Northern Inter-County Championships, to be held at Gateshead International Stadium next Saturday.

Level 1 Trampolining Course for PE Trainees
All of the PE trainees on the Carmel SCITT programme have spent two days in the Carmel gym taking their British Gymnastics Level 1 Trampolining Course. his will help them deliver trampolining in the many schools they will be teaching in.
Girls and Boys Win County U15 Pentathlon Championships
Both the girls and boys teams finished first in the U15 Pentathlon, at the Durham County Schools’ Combined Events Championships, at Monkton Stadium, Jarrow.
In the individual championships, Sarah Wilcock, Kiera Williams, Nat Bell and Isaac Ryans all finished in the top four and have been selected to represent the County at the Northern Championships. Full results to follow.
Carmel Athletes Power To Regional Final in National Schools’ Cup
In the first round of the English Schools’ Athletics Cup, held at Eastbourne Complex on Tuesday 15 May, Carmel won the Junior Girls, Inter Girls and Junior Boys competitions. With the Inter boys finishing second, all four teams have qualified for the Regional Finals. There were numerous personal bests on a very warm day, with the standout performance of Darcey Garbutt who ran 12.6 seconds for the JG 100m to gain 33 points for the team.

Runners Up in Town Swimming Gala
In the Darlington Schools’ Swimming Gala at the Dolphin Centre on Wednesday 16 May, Carmel finished second in both the boys and girls championships and therefore finished runners up overall. This was a fantastic achievement and a big thanks must go to all the coaches who help at the Carmel Swimming Club on Wednesday morning. Trio Called up to the County Rugby Team
Year 9s, Ben Brown, Szymon Strzelczyk and Isaac Ryans have been selected to represent the U14 County Rugby team in a festival at West Hartlepool Rugby Club on Sunday. Congratulations and Best of Luck to them all!
Alice, Johnson and Daniel Swim Well in the North-East Regional Championships
Year 10 pupils Alice Day, Daniel Boyer and Johnson Bache all swam well in the North-East Regional Swimming Championships at Ponds Forge, Sheffield. Competing in the 800m and 1500m, Johnson won his 800m with a huge personal best time with Alice and Daniel also achieving new lifetime bests. To view their performances please click the links below:-

Sarah Wilcock Wows at Windsor Before Royal Wedding
Sarah Wilcock represented the Northern Tetrathlon team at the Royal Windsor Horse Show The team finished 4th and were the only team to all jump clear. It was a mixed gender competition and Sarah came 9th. She was the 3rd girl. It was a thrill for Sarah and pony Patch to compete with Windsor Castle as a backdrop. Patch was also ridden by one of the Northern Irish team because they don’t transport their horses across for this competition. Thankfully, he loves his job and jumped a clear round for her too.
Year 10’s Beat Hurworth to Win Town Cup
Carmel Year 10 Football team beat Hurworth 3-1 in the Darlington Schools’ Cup Final. The match was played at the Middlesbrough Training ground at Rockcliffe, in front of about 100 spectators. Well done to the coach Mr Phillips and his winning team!

Year 9 Rugby Team Win County Cup
The Y9 Rugby team beat High Tunstall (Hartlepool) 32 – 21 to win the County Cup. The final was played inside the Northern Echo Arena and was a very tense game. The result means the Year 9’s have gone through another season without being beaten. Congratulations to their coach Mr. Phillips and to the team!
Pupils and Parents Enjoy Premiership Rugby in the Sun
The PE department arranged a coach trip to Kingston Park (Newcastle) to watch Newcastle Falcons play Wasps. The pupils got to meet the Wasps team when they arrived at the stadium, where autographs and selfies were the order of the day. On a very hot, sunny day they were treated to some excellent rugby, with the Wasps running out winners.
Year 8’s Win Town Cup After Extra-Time
Carmel Year 8 Football team beat Longfield 6-5 in the Darlington Schools’ Cup Final. With the scores level at 5-5 after normal time, it took a goal in extra-time to win the game. The match was played at the Middlesbrough Training ground at Rockcliffe, in front of about 100 spectators. Well done to the coach Mr Summers and his team!

Eleanor Clulow competes in The British Riding Club National Winter League Championships.
Eleanor Clulow (9C) made the long 230 mile journey, down to Bury Farm in Buckinghamshire this weekend for the British Riding Club National Winter League Championships. Eleanor and her pony Sariska won the Area 2 Qualifier back in March and they have worked hard in training to get ready for the National Championship. The training paid off as the pair rode to success being placed 10th overall in their arena in the Junior (U18’s) Prelim Intermediate Dressage.
Sarah Wilcock selected for the Royal Windsor Horse Show
Sarah Wilcock (9C) has been invited to represent the Northern Region in Tetrathlon at the Royal Windsor Horse Show. This is a huge honour as only 3 children from each region are allowed to take part. She will be competing over Saturday and Sunday (12th and 13th) and will ride her pony, Patch in a parade in front of the Royal box which concludes the show on the Sunday evening. Well done and good luck, Sarah.
Under 12’s Lose County Rugby Final
The Year 7 rugby team lost to St John’s (Bishop Auckland), 20 – 35, in the Cleveland County Schools’ Final. The match was played inside the Darlington Mowden Park Arena, in front of many parents and supporters who had taken time off work. It was the first match Carmel had lost this season, but they were beaten by a very strong team on the day. The team is already looking forward to next season! Well done to everyone for a fantastic year!

Luca’s Golden Try Wins Place in County Final
In a very exciting Year 7 County Cup semi-final, between Carmel and OLSB the score was 25 – 25 after normal time. The match went to extra-time with the first team to score to win. Carmel’s captain Luca Orsi, took a quick penalty, 10 metres out and scored the winning try, thus qualifying the team for the Final, which will be against St John’s (Bishop Auckland), on Wednesday 25 April, at the Mowden Park Arena, KO 1.30pm. We wish them all the best!
Carmel College Showjumping Team in National Schools’ Final
The Carmel College Showjumping Team of Eleanor Clulow, Sarah Wilcock and Eva Carter (all in 9C) travelled to Bury Farm Equestrian Village, Buckinghamshire at the weekend. The team had qualified as Durham County Champions for the 90cm National Schools’ Equestrian Association County Showjumping Championship. Eleanor, Sarah and Eva rode their ponies Sariska, Patch and Stormzy over 2 rounds of show jumps, the second round having a timed section with jumps up to 95cm. Despite some excellent riding, the team were not placed. Sarah and Patch, having also qualified as individuals in the 90cm and 1m classes had 4 rounds to jump. They were placed 3rd in the 90cm and 5th in the 1m. The girls’ form teacher, Mrs Atherton was not able to make the 230-mile journey to the Championships, however, she has given the girls a huge amount of support, attending all of the county qualifying competitions and arranging registration and entries with NSEA.
Tees Valley Rugby Champions!
All three Carmel teams qualified to represent Darlington in the Tees Valley Rugby Finals, held at Redcar Rugby Club, on Friday 20 April 2018. The two best teams from Darlington, Stockton, Hartlepool, Redcar and Middlesbrough contested the finals. Carmel’s young players did not disappoint.
The year 7 team won all of their matches to qualify for the final, where they beat High Tunstall. They are still unbeaten this season!
The Year 8 teams qualified for the semi-finals, where they beat Hummersknott and lost to Ian Ramsey in the final.
The Year 9 team won all of their matches to qualify for the final, where they beat OLSB. They are still unbeaten this season!

A coach trip to watch Premiership Rugby at Kingston Park has been organised by the PE department. The match will be Newcastle Falcons v Wasps, on Saturday 5 May, kick off 4pm. Tickets are limited at £15 (child) and £25 (adult). Coach departs Carmel 1pm/Coach returns Carmel 8pm.

Exciting Opportunity to try Laser Run at School Games Regional Qualifying Events
Pentathlon GB are excited to announce that Laser Run, the latest addition to our portfolio of sports, will be one of the events involved in the National School Games Final held in Loughborough this summer. This will be preceded by a selection of Schools Games Regional Qualifying Laser Runs which will enable athletes from Year 7 to Year 10 to try out the sport and potentially qualify for the National School Games Final.
Laser Run is the exhilarating finale to the Olympic sport of Modern Pentathlon with athletes required to alternate between shooting a laser pistol and running in a fast-paced and action-packed race to the finish line. This last phase of the Olympic Sport has now been adapted to form a stand-alone event suitable for all ages, levels and abilities, with no previous experience needed. Laser Run offers a fantastic entry point to multi-sports and tests multiple characteristics with the challenge of having stamina and speed for the run, along with focus and composure for the shoot.
Laser Run explained:
• Athletes start together with a short run into the shooting range and their allocated shooting bay.
• Using a laser pistol, athletes shoot at their designated target as many times at it takes to register 5 successful hits. Each successful hit is represented by a green light.
• After 5 successful hits or 50 seconds (whichever comes first), athletes can leave the range and begin their first run before returning to the same range, bay and pistol for their next shoot.
• After their final shoot, competitors complete their last running loop before crossing the finish line

Layla Awarded Funding for Athletics
World Catholic Games double medalist and Carmel Sixth form student, Layla Bell has just been awarded a grant of £1000, from the County Durham Community Foundation Talented Individuals Funding Programme. The money will be used to help with her training, travel and competition expenses. Congratulations Layla!
English Schools’ Cross Country Championships
Congratulations to Lucy-Erin Hunter (145) and Daniel Boyer (150), who represented County Durham at the English Schools’ Championships at Temple Newsam Park, Leeds on Saturday 17th March 2018. Despite the appalling weather conditions, Lucy-Erin finished 53rd in the senior girl’s race and Daniel came 257th in the intermediate boy’s event. The Durham results were as follows:
Junior Girls 10th, Inter Girls 7th, and the Senior Girls 16th. Group C Girls 1st.

James Wilcock Wins the Winter Triathlon Final
The Pony Club Winter Triathlon Finals 2018, were held at Stantonbury Leisure Centre, Milton Keynes on Sunday 18th March. Competitors qualified at Area competitions across the three classes, Minimus, Junior and Open, throughout the Winter.
Sarah Wilcock came 17th in a very strong Junior class and James Wilcock came 1st in the Minimus class. Both put in solid performances in all 3 disciplines of running, shooting and swimming.

Year 11s v Staff Charity Cricket Match in Aid of Parkinsons Disease
A staff v Pupils Cricket match was played on Wednesday lunchtime on the all weather pitch. The game was organised by Matilda Weir, to raise money for Parkinsons Disease. The year 11s lost narrowly to a staff team made up of the Maths, Science and PE departments. Over £50 was raised. If you would like to contribute to the charity, please see Matilda!
U16 Rugby Team County 7s Champions
The U16 rugby team won all of their matches in the Cleveland County 7s tournament held at Allens West on Thursday 22 February. Despite the pitches being very wet and muddy the Carmel team didn’t concede a try during the whole tournament.

Carmel Ski Course to Falcade, Italy
Over the February half-term holiday, 81 pupils from years 8-10 enjoyed skiing in the Italian Dolomites. They had 5 hours of lessons per day and by the end of the week, all were skiing down the mountain. The group stayed at the Stella Alpina hotel in Falcade and spent the evenings, ice skating, swimming and tubing.

Carmel Win Darlington U15 Cricket Tournament
Carmel Girls Cricket team beat Wyvern School in the final of the Darlington U15 Cricket Tournament. They will now represent Darlington in the county finals.
Daniel and Lucy-Erin Selected For National Championships
After finishing in 21st position, in the Intermediate Boys age group, at the Northern Schools’ Inter-County Cross-country at Barnard Castle School on Saturday, Daniel Boyer has qualified for the Durham team (eight runners), for the English Schools’ Cross-Country Championships, to be held at Temple Newsam in Leeds, on Saturday 17 March 2018. Also selected, for the Senior girl’s team, was Lucy-Erin Hunter on the strength of her win at the County Championships. Congratulations and good luck to you both! Megan Noble is the second reserve for the Intermediate Girls team.

British Record Long Jumpers Spikes Now On Display in the PE Department
Former Team GB athlete and Olympian Chris Tomlinson, who twice broke the British Long Jump record, has donated the spikes he wore when jumping 8m 35cm to the PE department. They are now on display with other sporting memorabilia, in the PE corridor. Thank you Chris!
Lucy-Erin Wins Durham County Schools’ Cross-Country
Twelve Carmel athletes braved the snow in the Durham County Schools’ Cross Country Championships, which was held at Barnard Castle School on Saturday 20 January. Lucy-Erin Hunter easily won the senior girls event, for the second consecutive year. Daniel Boyer enjoyed a fantastic run, to finish 5th in the Intermediate Boys and Megan Noble came 9th in the Intermediate Girls. All three have been selected to represent Durham in the Northern Schools’ Inter-County Championships on Saturday 03 February, on the same course at Barnard Castle. Climbing is now on the PE Curriculum
Pupils are now enjoying the new climbing wall, in their PE lessons. They have started off by bouldering to develop their techniques and will move on to climb the many differentiated routes up the wall. Climbing clubs before school, lunchtimes and after school are available to all students.
Fab Four selected for County Rugby team
A huge congratulations to Joe Berry, Sam Berry, Ezra Laundy-Blair and Aaron Fernandes, who have been named in the Durham County Schools’ Rugby U16 squad to face Cumbria this weekend. The game will be played across 2 Durham squads, The Princes and The Bishops, taking place at Penrith RFC at 2pm. We wish them the best of luck!
Year 7 Girls Darlington 5-a-side Football Winners
The Year 7 Girls’ football team won the Darlington Schools’ 5-a-side Championships, by beating Longfield 2-0 in the final. In the group stages they beat Polam 1-0, drew with Wyvern 0-0 and beat Longfield B 5-0. The girls, who are coached by Miss Mulligan and sixth formers Eve Hankin and Jess Walecki, will now represent Darlington in the County finals in the new year.
Year 7 Rugby Team County Champions
The Year 7 Rugby Team beat Hurworth 15-0, Our Lady & St Bede 15-5 and Egglescliffe 10-0 to win the County 10-a-side Rugby Cup. They are still unbeaten in their first year together and are looking forward to the 12 a-side County Cup after Christmas. The coaches Mr Hannaford, Mr Holmes and Mr Hodgson were delighted with the teams performance. Well done to the whole squad!
First Training On The New Climbing Wall
The first staff training for the new climbing wall took place in the Sports Hall. Nine teachers were involved and it is hoped climbing will be on the PE curriculum very soon, along with lots of extra-curricular opportunities for our students.
Rebecca Qualifies for British Schools’ Judo Championships
Rebecca Butterfield (11E) finished 2nd in the North East Judo Championships, gaining a silver medal and a position to compete in the British Schools judo competition in March. This weekend she is also competing in the British National Judo competition in Sheffield. Well done Rebecca!
Daniel Finishes 7th in the British Modern Biathlon Championship.
Daniel Boyer came 7th in the Under 16 Boys event at the British Modern Biathlon Championships. The event involved was held at the Tudor Grange Leisure Centre, Solihull, on the 25th-26th November 2017. Daniel, with a great run (1600m in 4.58.18) and a solid swim (200m 2.14.70), took 13 seconds off his pre-qualifying runtime which helped him to a top 10 spot. Daniel’s younger brother Alex won the British Under 11 Boys title to add to his British Schools U10 title in March. He’ll be a year 7 in Carmel next September!!

Daniel Selected for Spanish Training Camp
Daniel Boyer (10A) has been selected to attend the North-East Triathlon Academy Winter Training Camp in Almeria, Spain. The camp will run in December and there are only 6 athletes aged 15 – 19 from the North East that have been asked to attend, so it will be a great opportunity for Daniel to enhance his experience and get some 1 to 1 interaction with national level coaches. Also participating in the camp is Christian Brown, a former pupil of Carmel College, who is acting as assistant coach and will be traveling out with Daniel to act as a mentor for him. Well done Daniel!
Rory meets the all Blacks!
Rory Forster (8R) went to Murrayfield to watch the Scotland versus New Zealand, rugby international and was lucky enough to meet the coach Steve Hanson and many of the team. They were amazing and had their photos taken with the rugby mad youngster!
Adam Finishes Fourth in Italy
Adam Billany travelled to Genoa, in Liguria, Italy to represent Great Britain in the European Para Youth Games 2017 in sailing. He competed against 9 other boats from 5 different countries. The event took part in the Hansa 303 double handed class which he had never sailed before and Adam sailed with a crew who he hadn’t met prior to flying out. Overall despite some unfavourable wind conditions, they managed to finish 4th overall and off the water the event was also a great experience.
Darlington Sportshall Athletics Championships
In the Darlington Secondary Schools’ Sportshall Athletics Championships, held at the Dolphin Centre, Carmel Boys won both their events. The full results were:-

- Year 8 Girls 2nd
Three of the teams will now represent Darlington in the County Finals. The Primary Schools’ and the Secondary Schools’ Championships were run by the Carmel Year 10 Sports leadership team.
Year 8 Rugby Team meet World Cup Winner
The Carmel Year 8 rugby team met up with England World Cup winner, Mike Tindall before the England v Argentina game at Twickenham Stadium.
Carmel Girls Win Town Cross Country
Over a hundred pupils represented Carmel in the annual Darlington Schools’ Cross Country Championships, at Wyvern Academy, on Wednesday 15 November. The best individual finisher was Daniel Boyer(10A) who won the Inter Boys race by some margin, despite being a year younger. James Wilcock (7C) was runner-up in the Minor boys race and Megan Noble (10R) came third in the Inter Girls race. The Girls won their championship, the boys were second and overall Carmel finished 2nd. Congratulations and well done to all of the runners.

Quartet Earn County Rugby Selection
The following Carmel players have been selected for Durham County U14 Rugby team. They will play in a tournament at Billingham RFC, on Wednesday 22nd November 2017. (Kick off 7.15pm). Ben C Brown, Ben P Brown, Isaac Ryans and Szymon Strzelczyk.
The selection was based on Newcastle Falcons Academy GASP principles:
* Game Sense (understanding of PoP, positioning on field with and without the ball).
* Attitude (towards personal and team development, commitment to training and games).
* Skill Set (positional and game based skills – catch – pass – tackle).
* Physical Potential (Not just size but fitness and desire).

Carmel Students Enjoy Their Twickenham Experience
Mr and Mrs Holt, Mr Summers and Mr Hodgson accompanied 45 students and parents, on the the PE trip to Twickenham Stadium, to watch England beat Argentina. Carmel U15 Rugby team Knocked out of Vase
The U15 Rugby team travelled to Ampleforth College to play their Nat West Vase fixture. The match was played in a good spirit with Ampleforth running out 57 – 7 winners. Ben Brown scored Carmel’s only try with a superb run. After the match, the boys were treated to the famous Ampleforth hospitality and enjoyed a lovely meal (and seconds).

Year 7 Rugby Team Unbeaten in Darlington Tournament
Carmel Year 7 Rugby Team continued their perfect start to the season by winning four more matches at the Darlington All Schools Tournament. The competition was played on Tuesday 7 November, at the Darlington Rugby Club. They beat Wyvern Academy 35-0, St Aidan’s 10-0, Hurworth 5-0 and Staindrop 15-0.

Alfie wins Bronze in Darlington Cyclo-Cross Championships
Alfie Taylor (10C), finished third in the Darlington Schools’ Cyclo-Cross Championships on Saturday 4 November. The event was held at Longfield Academy on a tough muddy course. Well done Alfie!
Dolphin Centre Party Weekend
Year 8 Rugby Team Rampant in Town Tournament
The Year 8 Rugby team played exciting and entertaining rugby, in the Darlington Schools Rugby tournament, held at Darlington RFC. They only conceded one try and scored sixteen. They beat Wyvern 35-0, Longfield 25-0 and Education Village 20-5.
National Silver for Ella along with North East Selection
Ella Boyer (8P) won a Silver Medal in the Under 15 National Age Group Water Polo Championships held at Manchester Aquatic Centre. Ella was part of the City of Sheffield Water Polo team, who pulled together the leading players from around the North East and was also playing a year above her own age group. On their way to the national final they defeated Otter Futura (London) 16-0, Cheltenham 12-2 and Otter A (London) 8-5. They however came up against a strong Newton Abbot team in the national final and were beaten 11-3. Ella has also been selected for the North East team in the Under 14 British Inter-Regional Water Polo Championships at Walsall in December.

Year 7 Rugby Team Kick Off with Three Wins
The Year 7 Carmel Rugby Team played their first matches at the Darlington Schools’ Festival at Darlington Rugby Club. They beat Education Village 35 – 0, St Aidan’s 35 – 0 and Hurworth 20 – 5. The boys who train together on a Tuesday, Thursday and Friday lunchtime, played some exciting rugby and are looking forward to future success on the rugby field.
Carmel Swimming Club Raise £1000 for Charity
The Carmel Swimming Club, who train at the Dolphin Centre, before College every Wednesday, attempted to swim 12,900m (516 lengths) to match the number of the days the Dolphin Centre has been open. Thirty swimmers took part and actually managed to swim 1640 lengths (41,000m), which is about 25 miles. They were each sponsored by friends and family and between them are raised £1000, which they presented to the Mayor of Darlington and St. Theresa’s Hospice. A special mention to Nina Taylor who managed to collect nearly £200. The Dolphin Centre very kindly provided Hot Chocolate and Muffins to all of the pupils. Many congratulations to everyone who took part.
Carmel Skiers On The Slope
We are now on our third week of Ski lessons, at Silksworth, Sunderland. The pupils who are learning to ski before going on the college Ski Trip to Falcade, Italy in February half-term. The progress they are making is incredible, with 2 groups already on the main slope. There are 7 more sessions after half-term and can be booked through Mrs Smith.
Year 8 Rugby Team unbeaten in Cleveland U13 Rugby League
The Year 8 rugby team won their opening three fixtures in the Cleveland League. They played their matches at Allens West in Eaglescliffe. The results were as follows:

Darlington Junior Hockey Festival
Young hockey players took part in the Darlington Junior Hockey Festival on Sunday, October 15, which showcased Carmel’s latest hi-tech facilities. The event was organised by Darlington Hockey Club and attracted top players from around the area.
The £1/2m, brand new, all-weather pitch came on stream last month transforming a quagmire into one of the best facilities in the area. As a result, interest in the sport at the college has grown among boys and girls. The pitch is also home to Darlington Hockey Club, where its members also deliver training sessions for students forging links between the school and the community.
PE teacher Rachael Bowes said: “The new pitch is amazing and has allowed us to generate a huge interest in hockey. We have boys’ and girls’ teams playing and training, both in and out of school hours and we are really looking forward to hosting the tournament.
“We have only been using the pitch since September and already we are seeing some very capable young players come through from all year groups. Our Year 12 and 13 players are being joined by other sixth form students from around the area who are using the pitches for training, making it a truly community facility.”
Olivia Austin, 16, said: “Hockey is great fun, a fabulous way to run off some energy and learn how to be a better team player.”
Matthew Phillips, 15, added: “We were amazed when football was replaced by hockey but we are really enjoying it and it is certainly just as competitive.”

Darlington Schools’ Year 10 Netball Champions
The year 10 netball team won the U15 town netball tournament held at Polam. They scored a maximum of 25 points to continue their winning streak having now won every town league game and town tournament since year 7. Well done ladies!
Darcey Finishes Fourth in British Tumbling Championships
Darcey Garbutt (8E) finished in fourth place in the British Tumbling Championships, held at the Echo Arena, in Liverpool. This competition was also a trial for the World Championships in November, where ‘British Gymnastics’ take 4 gymnasts from each age group to the worlds. Unfortunately for Darcey she had severs last year and was injured early this year in April, and unfortunately you had to be nominated to trial in April. As Darcey’s coach didn’t nominate her she will miss out as they are taking 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th place from the British Champs. Darcey deserved and earned the place coming 4th but it’s not to be this time. Well done Darcey anyway! Everyone at Carmel is very proud of you and your achievements.
Team GB Selection for Adam
Adam Bilany (Y13) has been selected to represent Team GB on the Para Sailing Team at the European Para Youth Games in Genova, Italy on the 9th -15th October 2017. He will be travelling with 3 other teammates from the UK along with a team leader and a World Para sailing Coach. Between them the team will be sailing Hansa 303 Class dinghies that have been proposed as one of the classes to help reinstate Para sailing into the Paralympics in 2024. We wish Adam all the best and congratulate him on his selection.

‘Introduction to Inclusive Sports’
26 Year 10 BTEC Sport students will be attending the ‘Introduction to Inclusive Sports’ course on Thursday 5th October. The course will take place at Marsh House Sports & Community Centre, Marsh House Avenue, Billingham TS23 3HB 10am – 2pm. The course aims to introduce students to disability and disability sport. The course features games and activities to challenge the perceptions of learners. At the end of the course students will be able to lead informal disability sport sessions and feel confident working with people with disabilities. It is both a theory and practical course. Students will be required to participate fully in all parts of the course to receive a certificate.
The course will cover the following topics:
Disability awareness – Terminology, disability types, dos and don’ts, experiencing disability.
Disability sport coaching – Ethics, Inclusion spectrum, STEP principle.
Disability Sport – Boccia, Kurling, Table cricket, Seated Volleyball, Goalball.
Alana in the Champions League
Alana Prior (Y13) will be Cycling for her team ‘Boompods EdCo’ in the Revolution Champions League, on the velodrome in London, Glasgow and Manchester. The races will be broadcast live on Eurosport, on 25 November, 2 December and 6 January. She will be competing against the likes of Lizzie Armistead on the track in the following events: Points Race, Scratch Race, Madison TT, Team Elimination and the Elimination / Scratch Race. Carmel Ski Trip Falcade (Italy) 2018
Ski Information Evening
The Ski information evening will be held on Tuesday 31 October 2017, starting at 6.15pm, in the John Caden Hall.
All parents/guardians along with pupils are advised to attend.
Ski equipment and clothing will be available on the evening to purchase or hire from David Sayers of Yarm.
Ski Tuition at Silksworth Ski School in Sunderland
We would recommend at least one session at Silksworth and if possible more before going to Italy. This will allow your child to make faster progress on the snow, in Falcade and have an even better experience on the mountain.
The cost of £20 per session includes transport + equipment + 2 hours tuition. The minibus will depart Carmel at 3.35pm and return at 7.45pm. The pupils should be collected at this time. The pupils will need warm clothes which must include long sleeves, trousers and gloves. As the groups are put into ability by the Silksworth Ski School, we suggest if you have never Skied before you should aim for a session in the first three weeks.
Please collect a booking form from Mrs Smith (student reception) and return completed form with payment.
U16 Rugby Team Top The County Table
In the first round of the Cleveland County U16 County Rugby Ten-a-side Tournament Carmel were convincing winners of all their matches and now top the table. The event was held at Allens West Playing Fields on the 28 September 2017. The Carmel Squad was made up of Joe Berry, Sam Berry (Capt), Aaron Fernandes, Ryan Gilligan, Regan Godfrey, Matthew Hill, Josh Irving, Ezra Laundy-Blair, Tom Mitchell, Matthys Mooij, Matthew Phillips, Ben Ryan and Oliver Turner Blake. Carmel Satellite Volleyball Team
Carmel Satellite Volleyball Team lost to Grangefield VC 3 sets to 0 in their first match of the season. They are playing in the Teesside League Division 2 against adult teams. The match was played in the Carmel College gym and each set was very close.
Darlington U16 Netball Winners
The U16 netball team won all of their matches in the Darlington Schools’ Netball Tournament. In the competition, which was held at Polam Hall School, they scored more than the twice as many goals as their opponents, in every match. The team has been kindly sponsored by GSK, who have provided the new netball dresses. A big thank you to Mr Smith.
